SubRip (SRT) is the most popular text-based subtitle format, widely supported across various media players and video editing software. Each entry in an SRT file includes a sequential number, start and end timecodes, and the subtitle text. It is well-known for its simplicity and ease of use.
History
SubRip subtitles were developed as part of the SubRip software, which was first released in 1999 by a developer known as Brain. The software was designed to extract subtitles and their timings from video files, particularly DVDs, using optical character recognition (OCR). This allowed subtitles to be converted into plain text files, which could then be edited easily. The simplicity and versatility of the SRT format quickly led to its widespread adoption. Today, SubRip remains the most popular and widely supported subtitle format in the digital media industry.
