Video Object (VOB) is a container format found on DVDs that stores video, audio, subtitles, and menu contents. It is based on the MPEG-2 program stream format and provides high-quality video and audio for DVD playback.
History
Video Object was developed as part of the DVD-Video specification by the DVD Forum in 1995. The format was designed to encapsulate various multimedia streams such as video, audio, subtitles, and menus on DVDs. Based on the MPEG-2 program stream, VOB files offer high-quality video and audio suitable for home entertainment systems. The adoption of DVDs in the late 1990s and early 2000s led to the widespread use of VOB files, which played a crucial role in the transition from analog to digital media in home video consumption. Despite the decline of physical media in favor of streaming services, VOB remains significant for archival purposes and continues to be used in various DVD production applications.
