Ogg Video (OGV) is a free and open container format developed by the Xiph Foundation. It is used to store video streams along with audio, commonly using codecs like Theora for video and Vorbis for audio. It is popular in open-source applications and web video.
History
The Ogg Video project began in the late 1990s with a mission to create a free and open standard for multimedia content. The Theora video codec, released in 2004, is often used within OGV files, complementing the Vorbis audio codec, also developed by Xiph. Theora was derived from the VP3 codec, which was donated by On2 Technologies to the Xiph Foundation. Although OGV is a versatile and free format, its adoption has been limited compared to more widely used formats like MP4 and WebM.
