MPEG-4 Video (M4V) is a video container format developed by Apple, similar to MP4. It is primarily used for movies, TV shows, and music videos downloaded from the iTunes Store and may contain DRM protection.
History
The M4V file format was introduced in April 2003 alongside the launch of the iTunes Store. It was designed as a video container format similar to MP4 but with the unique capability of incorporating AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio and DRM protection for secure distribution of video content. M4V files are used primarily for TV episodes, movies, and music videos purchased through the iTunes Store. The DRM protection in M4V files restricts playback to authorized Apple devices and software, tightly integrating the format within the Apple ecosystem.
