SubViewer

  • File Extension SBV
  • Popularity Rare
  • Subtitle Type Text

SubViewer (SBV) is a text-based subtitle format primarily used in conjunction with the SubViewer software and several media players. Very similar to SubRip, this format supports basic text formatting and timing to synchronize subtitles with video playback. It is widely supported among older multimedia players.

History

SubViewer was developed by David Dolinski in the late 1990s for use with the SubViewer software, which he made available on his personal website. The format became notable for its adoption by the DivX media player, which helped popularize it in the early 2000s. In 2008, YouTube added support for SubViewer, allowing videos on the platform to be retroactively subtitled using this format. Despite its initial popularity, the use of SubViewer has declined with the advent of more advanced subtitle formats.
